Paver Calculator — Patio, Driveway & Walkway
Choose the shape, paver size, pattern, and waste factor to generate a fast hardscape takeoff. The calculator also estimates base rock, bedding sand, and edge restraint for ordering.
Bedding sand uses a 1-inch layer. Gravel tonnage uses a planning factor of 1.4 tons per cubic yard.
Pattern planning
- Running bond is the fastest layout and usually produces the least waste.
- Herringbone locks together well for driveways but often needs extra cuts at the perimeter.
- Basket weave usually lands between running bond and herringbone for waste and labor.
Standard paver sizes
| Paver | Area each |
|---|---|
| 4×8 | 0.22 sq ft |
| 12×12 | 1.00 sq ft |
| 16×16 | 1.78 sq ft |
| 24×24 | 4.00 sq ft |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the waste slider include pattern waste?
Yes. The calculator applies the selected waste slider and then adds a small pattern multiplier for herringbone and basket weave layouts.
How much gravel base should I use under pavers?
A 4-inch base is a common starting point for patios and walkways. Driveways may need more depth depending on soil and traffic.
Why is edge restraint measured in linear feet?
Most paver edge restraints are ordered by lineal footage around the perimeter of the hardscape.
