Bill of materials FAQ

Five answers for better ordering, estimating, and job prep.

What is a bill of materials in construction?

A construction BOM is a structured list of materials needed for a project, usually showing quantities, units, supplier references, and costs. It helps estimators, PMs, and field crews stay aligned.

Should I group items by trade or by phase?

Most teams group by trade first—lumber, concrete, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and finishes—because ordering, subcontractor coordination, and supplier relationships usually follow those categories.

Can I use this as a work receipt?

Yes. Add supplier names, quote numbers, lead times, and item notes, then print the sheet for delivery verification, field signoff, or owner communication.

How should I handle alternates and waste?

Use the notes field per item to flag alternates, finish selections, or expected waste. Many pros also add separate contingency rows for overage, fasteners, adhesives, and misc. hardware.

Do supplier columns need to be on every printout?

No. Keep them visible while buying, then switch them off for a cleaner field copy when you only need categories, quantities, and totals onsite.
